Quote of the week
Talk about enthusiasm…
The first words that a child said to me this morning was this sentence by Matthew in Year 5.
“Hey…Mr. Mitchell, we won! 4:0 to us, did you see it?”
No mention of the England game, just infectious enthusiasm about our project! What a way to start the week!

I’ve decided to become German now. Just call me Dieter Langley from now on. At least my country can play football.

Dear pupils of Year 5 Heathfield Primary School,
What a great blog, and thank you for your interest in the German footballteam. They have started the World Cup quite well, but let’s see what happens next.
I was eight years old when England won the World Cup against Germany with the (in)famous Wembley goal in1966. All boys in my neighbourhood were so thrilled by the match that we started playing football and joining our local club virtually from the very next day. It was a great time. I played number 9 which was Uwe Seeler from my hometown Hamburg. Four years later, he scored the incredible equalizer against England in Mexiko with a backheader.
Sorry, this is all so long ago!
I placed my comment in this section because I wanted to share with you two famous sayings by Germany’s first national coach Sepp Herberger:
The first one is: Der Ball ist rund, which means “The ball is round”, no real news, you would say, but what he really meant to say was this: In football, anything can happen.
The second is: Nach dem Spiel ist vor dem Spiel, meaning: “After the match is before the match”. By that he meant to say: Dont get stuck on yesterday’s success, there is a new match to come on which to focus.
Best wishes to all of you, and to England of course.
And please visit our website http://www.thinkgerman.org.uk with lots of games, competitions and information on Germany and the German language.
Cheers to all

Hi Germany. We are following and supporting Serbia. We are feeling rather nervous about the match tomorrow afternoon, after your stunning performance in your opening game. I’m sure you know we had a player sent off and then gave away a penalty to lose our opening game 1 – 0! Not the start we were hoping for! Good Luck for tomorrow, we think it will be an exciting game.
Please visit our blog and leave us a prediction on our wallwisher of what you think the score will be. Thanks Mrs Formby

Dear pupils of Year 5 Heathfield Primary School,
Thank you so much for your kind reactions to my comments on your blog.
I thought of one other link that may be of interest to you: the Arsenal “Double Club” (www.arsenal.com/the club).
It’s a unique project where Arsenal and some other football clubs, together with the Goethe-Institut, the Institut Francais and other language institutions, offer football lessons in connection with German, French, Spanish or Portuguese to schools in the UK.
Check whether that might be something for you!
Otherwise, Germany is still going strong in the World Cup, and we are quite delighted about it. And sorry for England’s unlucky defeat. But let’s bear in mind, it’s just a game! Or, to quote former Liverpool football coach Bill Shankly: Some people think football is a matter of life and death. I assure you it’s much more serious than that!
Best wishes
Cord Meier-Klodt

Dear pupils, dear Maryam,
German’s biggest tabloid “BILD” is convinced that Germany is going to win against Argentina. Today’s headline said: bye bye Diego!
Well I am not so shure, but of cause I hope they are right,
it will be an exciting game again,
cheers
Eva

Dear pupils, dear Maryam,
I hope you liked this exciting game. Everybody in Germany was partying in the streets afterwards.
Our biggest tabloid “BILD” wrote yesterday “bye, bye Diego” and they were right, and today they added “keep this issue for your grand-children”, what probably nobody will.
But indeed, what a wonderful young team and we all really enjoyed the game and Mr. Meier-Klodt’s quote is really funny. Hopefully it does not get more serious than that,
cheers
Eva

Dear pupils of Year five,
Germany had great games in the world cup and we had to loose at one point and now we did.
Spain was better in this game and still, we are very proud of our young and enthusiastic team,
it was fun writing on your blog,
cheers and good luck with your project,
Eva from Berlin
